Freund's Adjuvants

Product presentation : Freund´s Adjuvants

Freund’s adjuvants comes in two different product varieties, Freund’s Incomplete Adjuvant (FIA) and Freund’s Complete Adjuvant (FCA).

Our products are produced by Statens Seruminstitut in Copenhagen in and commercialized through Brenntag Biosector.

Freund's Incomplete Adjuvant (FIA):

FIA is a sterile mixture of highly refined mineral oil and Arlacel A emulsifier in the original 85:15 ratio.

FIA is used in many set ups of experimental immunology as positive control due to it's very high adjuvant potency.

Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA):

FCA is a sterile mixture of highly refined mineral oil and Arlacel A emulsifier in the original 85:15 ratio. It contains 500 mg/ml, heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria.

FCA is an extremely powerful adjuvant, perhaps the most powerful adjuvant ever designed.

It’s use is, however, accompanied by a number of serious adverse reactions. So for reasons of animal ethics it’s use is restricted to special cases of experimental immunology only, where no alternatives are available.

Our product is produced by Statens Seruminstitut in Copenhagen in accordance with the original recipe. Hence, in contrast to other producers our product contains the original strain of mycobacteria given by Freund.

It has not been substituted with other strains, such as M. butyricum or others.

Because of this, our FCA preparation was elected as the International Standard Preparation for Freund's Complete Adjuvant at an independant scientific workshop in Greece in 1988 and 1990 (ref. Stewart-Tull 1989 and 1991).
